Introduction

It is often said that bowlers win matches and batsmen save them. As with all sayings there is a large element of truth in this -- for example, in a lot of club games, bowlers have to bowl sides out to win.
However, with the advent of overs matches, bowlers often just bowl to contain batsmen and the responsibility is then on the batsman to break the strangehold of the bowlers.

The whole idea of cricket is to score more runs than the opposition. But, this cannot be just sitting back in the pavilion - right?

It is utmost important that a batsman's game is built around a solid defence and technical proficiency.

No player has all the shots, but he should be able to handle deliveries that test his weaker areas safely. And, a good technique will give him a greater chance of survival on difficult or deteriorating pitches.
A batsman must also develop the ability to identify and remember the gaps in the field so that he can work the ball for a single. This rotates the strike, particularly for a more talented or in-form partner, and keeps the scoreboard ticking.
